Scientists have tried to produce Spider silk, an extremely flexible and durable material for many years with disappointing results. Bolt Threads has replaced the spiders with genetically modified yeasts which produce silk like proteins from simple carbohydrates through fermentation. There has been little innovation in apparel after polypropylene and Lycra.
